The Assistant Reserves Officer will help nature’s recovery by working to ensure our valuable nature reserves are well managed for wildlife - to help create a wilder future for everyone. Our small team of four is busy, but it’s a rewarding role with no two days the same. We look after 18 nature reserves across the county, from Lowland heathland and mire, to wet woodland and floodplain meadows. It’s not just us; our Dexter Cattle and sheep graze many of the sites, and we have a superb team of volunteers to help, including site wardens, friends-of groups, skilled key volunteers, stockwatchers, Wildlife Trainees and a weekly practical work party. What you’ll be doing; Carrying out regular practical reserve management on our nature reserves. Carrying out habitat and infrastructure works, managing volunteers, helping to look after our livestock, engaging with the public and carrying out occasional biological survey and monitoring work Regularly using tools such as chainsaws, brushcutters, tractors, trailers and hand tools Safely managing the practical weekly volunteer work party Keeping our tools, equipment, vehicles and machinery in good working condition. Carrying out regular desk-based and application-based administration What we’re looking for; A commitment to wildlife conservation and a working knowledge of principles of habitat management for UK wildlife Self-motivation and problem-solving in the field with a strong work ethic - prepared to carry out sometimes repetitive work for full days for long periods, and a willingness to work in all weathers A commitment to high standards of work and attention to detail, ensuring high safety standards are maintained Willingness to undertake training in the use of tractors and related implements, chainsaws, brushcutters, livestock handling and first aid. Experience in the above would be an advantage, however full training will be given The ability to engage well with colleagues, volunteers and members of the public This post will be DBS checked at basic level.
