Our strong international research profile is supported by excellent mechanical and electronic engineering facilities that are key to continued performance at the highest levels of research. Applications are invited for a Technician to help lead the development of bespoke electronics solutions within the Department providing specialist technical support for the Department’s diverse research portfolio and undergraduate teaching laboratories. The holder of this post will have particular focus on developing new electronic designs from initial concept to finished product as specified and requested by the various internal departmental groups. As a team the electronic workshop also provides support and implements design improvements on legacy systems currently in use within the various research laboratories. As the electronic workshop explores and exploits a wide range of technologies to meet the requirements of these groups, the successful candidate will be expected to have wide knowledge of instrumentation design and control, signal acquisition and processing as well as both analog/digital system integration. A knowledge of RF switching components, mixers and amplifiers would also be highly advantageous. Ideally the right candidate will have strong background and knowledge of Analog systems augmented with an appreciation and understanding of digital systems and how these both technologies can interface to DACs and ADCs in order to connect to microcontrollers and processors with the data and control being accessible via wider system networking infrastructures. To be considered for the role you should be educated to a minimum of HND level in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or have significant experience in Industry within a relevant discipline or equivalent experience in a similar role. Additionally, you should possess a wide skillset thorough knowledge and experience of analogue/digital electronics to work with schematic entry, PCB layout, electronic assembly, component selection, system testing and debug. The successful candidate will not only have a strong customer focus but will need a logical, analytic, systematic and creative approach to solving complex engineering problems.
