Mechanical Engineer – Medical Device Development ROLE OVERVIEW Our purpose at the Devices Centre of Excellence is to improve the patient experience of self-administering medication. As a member of a friendly and collaborative team you will be involved in all stages of device development from user requirement capture and due diligence of vendor activities through to technical trouble-shooting, manufacturing support and complaints investigations. The role requires understanding the patient and the device whilst balancing project and business requirements. You will use both technical and planning skills to predict and mitigate product risks. Alongside the core role, there are opportunities for growth both professionally and personally. With involvement in operational and research activities to improve or maintain the departmental knowledge and culture, you will have an opportunity to develop your skillsets and capabilities. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Provide technical support for the design and development of drug delivery devices from requirements capture to transfer to manufacture Support early-stage usability studies to capture patient capabilities and preferences Select and justify design specifications Apply theoretical engineering knowledge (e.g. forces, friction, mechanism analysis, materials) to analyse and critique design concepts and solutions, identifying areas critical to function, likely failure modes and design sensitivities, both by hand and using software tools. Perform tolerance analysis using RSS or Montecarlo methodology Produce viable solutions in response to specific requirements or specifications Produce models and drawings using 3D CAD Modify and develop 3D CAD & drawings from non-native CAD systems Design new test rigs and challenge parts Perform investigative lab testing to predict design performance and acceptability Risk management, assessment and mitigation, including DFMEA, input to UFMEA and assessment of critical functions. Support supplier design reviews and Pfizer internal design reviews Create documentation to support medical device development and industrialization Interact effectively with suppliers and other Pfizer groups MINIMUM EXPERIENCE Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent or related qualification Strong written and verbal communication skills including experience communicating with technical and non technical colleagues at all levels Experience of critical thinking and problem-solving in an engineering setting. Experience of applying engineering calculations, such as friction, stress analysis, and tolerance analysis. Experience with CAD (ideally Creo) and related document management systems Understanding of quality management systems including risk assessment activities ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE Experience of the following areas would also be useful in the role: Medical device development User-centered design Plastic components and injection moulding Electro-mechanical systems Non-linear FEA Process Capability Analysis (predictive and actual) Work Location Assignment: Flexible Purpose Breakthroughs that change patients' lives...
